The other day at the end of a Renovatus podcast, I heard this open invitation to the eucharist/communion table. It struck me as sacred, beautiful, and embracing. I wanted to remember it and to share it, so I am posting it here.
This is the Table, not of the church, but of the Lord.
It is made ready for those who love Him and for those who want to love Him more.
So come,
You who have much faith and you who have little,
You who have been here often and you who have not been here long,
You who have tried to follow and you who have failed.
Come, because it is the Lord who invites you.
It is His will that those who want Him should meet Him here.
Come to the Table.
Thanks…I really like this and if I were still an elder I would use it.
You’re welcome. Me too.
I love this! There is a beauty in the invitation; in the “good news” announcement! I am going to use this the next time I do communion. :)
Thanks for stopping by Paul. I love this too. Since I posted it, I’ve learned that Brian Zahnd also uses this invitation to the table. It has been used in a variety of denominations and quoted in several books. It may originate from the Iona Community in Scotland.
