A Good Night of American Idol

I tell you, some of the best music came out of the late 70’s.

You should’ve been there. ;)

Best of the night

Best artist of the season

Not my favorite song, but another great performance.

The best artists often don’t win on this show, but usually they do as well or better than the winners.

  1. Grace,

As much as I hate to admit it, we have been watching Idol this year. It started when we were in the hospital with Staci’s mother and, well, we just got hooked.

We actually voted last night, for Michael Johns. Anyone who sings Queen is a favorite of mine.

Funny story, at least to me. A couple of years ago I got an email from a friend of mine in Indonesia. She had been watching the 2006 version and was desperate to vote for Taylor Hicks but couldn’t because she didn’t live in the US. I had no idea who Taylor Hicks was but sat down and learned how to vote for my friend. Do you think we threw that competition?

  2. Eric,
This is only my second season of watching, but I find it is better than lots of stuff on TV. My kids have voted a few times, but I don’t typically vote. If you made “1″ vote for your friend, I doubt if you threw the competition. Apparently some people place hundreds of votes in an evening. I think they need to get a life. :)

I really enjoyed Michael singing this. During the auditions he did an awesome performance of Bohemian Rhapsody.

  3. Yes, I saw the Bohemian Rhapsody and thought to myself; that guy should win this thing…

  4. David is very good and I think that he has a definite shot of taking it all the way. A few weeks back, Simon said, if this stays a talent show and not a popularity contest, you could/should win and I agree.

  5. I thought the same, but apparently Chris Cornell did the exact same cover of Billy Jean. Look it up on youtube. And my guy, Jason, may be in trouble if he doesn’t get it in gear.

    Cheers.

  6. Look at that Eric, we found 70’s music we agree on! Maybe next week will be Journey/Air Supply week. We can only hope. ;)

    jeff,
Sad to say, Simon is often right, and he’s right about this. I don’t think David will be the most popular, but there is no denying he has delivered consistently solid performances.

    nathan,
Hopefully last night was the kick in the pants that Jason needed. He’s going to have to push himself to the edge if he wants to stick around.

  7. David Cook is local to my neck of the woods – I am pulling for him.

  8. It’s nice to finally see an Aussie singer getting worldwide recognition on a singing contest. We have some fantastic talent here that the rest of the world often misses out on :-)

  9. I agree David Cook is the best artist, but he also seems awfully self-absorbed. It will be interesting to see how things develop with him and with the show.

I like Michael, but he’s not as confident as some of the others and it sometimes results in a loss of focus.

I really like Brooke. Simple, strong, mostly without pretense.

Castro, if he were a better singer, would have quite the combo of looks and talent.

  10. bob,
He’s my favorite, but I’m not convinced that winning will be the best thing for him. I thinking that winning the show would do the most good for David A because of his age.

    heather,
Australian musicians tend to be some of my favorites. :)

    bryan,
Interesting comments. Brooke reminds me a lot of Carly Simon. I prefer Jason’s voice to his looks. I think he has a tendency to not put his heart into his performance, and it’s showing. That was what made Hallelujah a stand-out performance for him.
